The international organisations ISO and IEC have developed the ISO/IEC 19770-1 standard for Software Asset Management (SAM). This standard helps organisations to show that their management of software assets conforms to a level that meets the requirements of corporate governance, and which ensures effective global support for the management of IT services. ISO/IEC 19770-1:2006 is aligned and supports the ISO/IEC 20000 standard.
At the time of writing the ISO/IEC 19770-2 Software Tag project is approaching completion. This project is aimed at providing a common identification and methodology for labelling software, or in other words putting the right "tags" on an intangible entity like software .
The results will be submitted to the ISO / IEC JTC1 SC7 WG21 workgroup ('WG21') which is already responsible, on 9 May 2006, for issuing the ISO / IEC 19770-1 Software Asset Management Processes standard.
